Basic aquarium setup for a freshwater tropical fish tank

All the components that you need to complete your aquarium setup are listed on this page. After deciding what kind of fish you will be keeping, you can select your components.

If you decide to keep freshwater tropical fish you will need a heater to keep the water at a temperature of between 68-86 ºF or 20-30 ºC.

Goldfish can be kept in a fish tank without having to heat the water so no heater required for a goldfish aquarium. They can however be kept in a heated aquarium with some tropical fish species, but most tropical fish can't be kept in a cold water tank with goldfish.

It is however possible to keep some species of tropical fish in a tank without a heater in certain regions with a warmer climate, although I will not recommend this, especially not for beginners.
