Aquarium Substrate Choices
Your Aquarium Substrate not only serves the purpose of making your fish tank look more natural but also has some other more important purposes. The most important is probably that it is one of the places in your aquarium that houses the good or beneficial bacteria that is necessary for good fish health. It also gives your live plants in a planted fish tank a place for their roots to grow in. When you want to breed with fish you need to have the type of substrate that is ideal for that specific type of fish. Different types of Substrate Aquarium Gravel is the one substrate that you can use for almost any type of tropical fish and is available from very fine to very coarse in all types of colors both natural and artificial.

Aquarium Sand is another option that is more often used where you have species like the Horseface Loach and Coolie Loach that likes to burrow into the sand. These species can however do just as well in aquarium gravel.

Peat Moss is mostly used in a fish tank with species that prefer brackish water. Peat will also soften the water although it will give your water a yellowish color after some time. A peat filter can also be used to soften the water.
